Candidate Statement:
Purpose for Running: Throughout my career as a professional counselor, supervisor, and counselor educator, I have seen how vital the American Counseling Association has been in advancing the profession, achieving parity with other mental health fields, and promoting effective, culturally responsive counseling services. Through serving in leadership roles at the state, regional, and national levels, I have also observed that ACA’s governance structure has at times made it difficult to address key issues in a timely manner. I am motivated by my leadership experiences, including earlier work on governance restructuring as ACES president (2006) and recent service on the Governing Council that approved the new Board of Directors and Advisory Council structures, to help ACA fully implement this new governance structure. Vision for Time in Office: I envision the new governance structure as one that enables ACA to be more proactive and to respond more swiftly to the myriad social and legislative issues impacting our profession and clients in need of counseling services. The Advisory Council will be able to engage in deeper, thoughtful discussions about the research and core issues affecting ACA members. Paired with consistent communication with the Board of Directors, this collaborative approach will help ensure the expertise of our divisions and insights from regions and state branches meaningfully shape the Board’s strategic decisions. Perspectives: My long history of service within ACA, divisions, and state chapters demonstrates my dedication to supporting the success of professional organizations, while focusing on the overall goals of ACA and the counseling profession. Service in leadership roles and my prior experience as ACA staff (Director of Grants and Assistant Director) provide me with a unique perspective on how ACA’s new governance model can operate more effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of its constituents.
