Since 2020, ACA’s leadership has worked to restructure our governance model. With the approval of the ACA Bylaws in June 2025, the implementation process has begun to retire a 32-member Governing Council and seat a 15-member elected Board of Directors.
This year is pivotal in implementing this transition. It starts with the call for nominations — for president-elect, treasurer-elect, treasurer and 11 at-large directors — culminating with seating the new Board of Directors on July 1, 2026. In addition, ACA will launch a new Advisory Council — consisting of representatives from ACA divisions and regions — starting July 1, 2026. The call for nominations opens on October 27, 2025.
The newly elected Board of Directors consists of the officers (president, president-elect, immediate past president, treasurer) and 11 at-large directors elected in a contested election by the ACA membership, as well as ACA’s CEO who serves as the board’s secretary. This is the governing body of ACA, which has fiduciary responsibility to oversee the strategic direction and overall management of the association. The board is charged with the development and oversight of ACA’s vision and mission. It provides the foundation for the operations of the association and the counseling profession.
Consisting of elected representatives from ACA’s 20 divisions, four geographic regions and a student representative, ACA's Advisory Council advises the Board of Directors — influencing policy, counseling the board on practice concerns and informing it on the counseling profession. This body will have direct influence on the strategic direction ACA takes in addressing concerns of the counseling community. Governing Council Representatives who are currently in the first or second year of their terms in fiscal year 2026 will roll into the Advisory Council on July 1, 2026. Divisions or regions with representatives whose terms expire on June 30, 2026, will elect new Advisory Council members in the coming election also to be seated on July 1, 2026.
