Call for Editors: Second Edition of The ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling

May 13, 2025

In celebration of the American Counseling Association’s 75th anniversary in 2027, ACA is pleased to announce the development of a fully revised and expanded second edition of the ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling, originally published in 2009. This new edition will be released via Counseling Nexus, ACA’s innovative digital publishing platform. The updated format will support the inclusion of multimedia content—such as audio, video, and interactive graphics—and allow for timely updates as the field evolves.

ACA is seeking a diverse team of 6–8 editors to lead this important project. We aim to assemble a group that represents the broad scope of the counseling profession, including both clinical practitioners and counselor educators from across various practice settings. This diversity is essential to ensuring the encyclopedia reflects the full range of knowledge, experience, and expertise within the field.

Editor Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing the original 2009 volume to determine which entries should be updated, removed, expanded, or newly developed
  • Designing a content structure appropriate for a modern digital reference work
  • Drafting a call for contributors and participating in the review and selection of writers
  • Reviewing and editing the submissions from content contributors
  • Collaborating with ACA Publications staff on the integration of multimedia and interactive content

Members of the editorial team will receive a modest honorarium payment at time of publication and complimentary access to the digital edition in recognition of their service and contribution.

Project Timeline:

  • July 15, 2025: Editorial team selected and convened
  • December 1, 2025: Content review of 2009 edition completed and structure for new edition finalized; call for contributors issued
  • January 30, 2026: Contributor recruitment and selection completed
  • January 30, 2027: Content written and reviewed and submitted for final proofreading and layout
  • June 1, 2027: Publication launch

If you are interested in serving as an editor, please submit a letter of interest describing your qualifications, experience, and areas of expertise—especially your connection to specific counseling practice areas—along with a brief CV highlighting your editorial or publication history, to publications@counseling.org by June 15, 2025.
