Proposal Topics

We invite proposal submissions that reflect a broad range of experiences, settings, and approaches to counselor supervision. Proposals should be grounded in current research, ethical practice, or applied strategies that support the development and effectiveness of clinical supervisors.

The following topic areas represent key domains of interest for the conference. Proposals may address one or more of these areas or introduce emerging topics relevant to supervision in counseling and mental health professions. 

  • Foundations of Clinical Supervision
    • Historical and professional foundations of clinical supervision
    • Roles and responsibilities of clinical supervisors across settings
    • Theoretical models of supervision (e.g., developmental, integrative, discrimination model)
    • Ethical guidelines for supervision, with emphasis on ACA Code of Ethics 
  • Legal, Ethical, and Multicultural Considerations
    • Informed consent, legal responsibilities, and supervisor liability
    • Managing dual relationships and setting appropriate boundaries in supervision
    • Culturally responsive supervision practices
    • Addressing systemic inequities and promoting anti-oppressive supervision approaches
  • Supervisory Skills and Techniques
    • Structuring and conducting individual, group and triadic supervision sessions
    • Providing effective feedback and conducting formative/summative evaluations
    • Addressing supervisee anxiety, resistance and growth challenges 
    • Strategies for supervision documentation, planning and goal setting 
    • Use of video recordings or live observation in supervisory practice
  • Supervision in Crisis and High-Risk Situations
    • Supervising counselors working with high-risk clients or crisis situations
    • Supporting supervisees through exposure to trauma and secondary traumatic stress
    • Adapting supervision practices to specific settings (e.g., schools, colleges, agencies) 
  • Evaluating and Supporting Supervisee Development
    • Understanding and responding to developmental stages of supervisees
    • Using evaluation tools, rubrics, and observation methods to assess progress
    • Creating and implementing remediation plans
    • Addressing impairment and gatekeeping responsibilities
  • Technology and Distance Supervision
    • Ethical and legal considerations for telesupervision
    • Competencies required for supervising virtual and hybrid counseling services 
    • Tools and platforms for delivering effective remote supervision 
  • Advanced Topics for Experienced Supervisors
    • Supervision of supervisors: mentoring new or peer supervisors
    • Navigating complex ethical dilemmas in multicultural or interdisciplinary contexts
    • Research-informed supervision: integrating supervision outcome measures and fidelity tools
    • Leadership in supervision: advocating for best practices at the organizational or policy level
    • Advanced gatekeeping: managing legal risk and institutional pressure while upholding ethical standards 
    • Supervision in integrated care or multidisciplinary teams
