Compulsive use of social media by teenagers is of increasing concern to mental health professionals. Currently, 71% of U.S. teens use social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Although there are benefits to social media, overuse can lead to problematic or addictive behaviors, depression, maladaptive cognitions and a distorted sense of time. To evaluate adolescent behaviors and establish appropriate treatment goals, counselors need reliable, age-appropriate instruments. In the October Journal of Counseling & Development, researchers Joshua C. Watson, Elizabeth A. Prosek and Amanda L. Giordano compare the psychometric properties of three measures of social media addiction and provide counselors with recommendations for choosing the best assessment for their client.
