New Year Resolutions for Dads

It is that cooooold time of the year again when the hot chocolate is flowing, fleece blankets abound, the fuzzy slippers are preferred footwear, and the mind wanders to the potential and possibility of a new year.  There is something magical about January and the promise of renewal.  Winter represents the end of the year and the close of an annual chapter.  As fathers we can rededicate ourselves to the importance of being a role model, a mentor, a friend, a counselor, a partner, husband, boyfriend, and countless other roles that we may have to play on a given day.  Here are some recommended resolutions for the year:

  1. Dedicate quality time to each of your children weekly (minimum 30 minutes of one-on-one time
  2. Take risks weekly (e.g try new food, new activity, new book, new places) this will inspire risk taking within your kids
  3. Make time to have one breakfast or lunch with your children at their school each month
  4. Make a list of goals for improvement for each family member and post them on the fridge to help hold each other accountable
  5. Practice kindness by volunteering once a month (minimum) with your kids

Always remember to tell your child the following each day:

  1. Believe in yourself
  2. Love yourself
  3. You were born for special reasons
  4. Look for ways to help others today
  5. Your primary purpose is to discover what your unique talents are (that no one else in the world has)
