Comedian Tackles Depression, Revives Career; Adele Opens Up About Struggles With Motherhood; Scientists Name “Most Relaxing Song Ever”

Comedian Chris Gethard was once the darling of Comedy Central. But after a sitcom cancelation, he found himself in the midst of a twisting career path, while struggling with depression, alcoholism, and anxiety. Gethard channeled this pressure into a one-man comedy show titled, “Career Suicide.” After honing his act, Gethard found Hollywood director-producer Judd Apatow in his corner. With advice from Apatow, he started sharing stories about mental health and allowed audience members to also open up during his shows. “It guided the jokes and the priorities of how I was building the show,” he said, using their input to tweak his material. “It also did really light a fire under me to step up and remember that there’s more to this than any other type of comedy I’ve done before.” Gethard’s new solo show can be seen at the Lynn Redgrave Theater in NYC. He’s also continued his comeback by landing acting roles on Comedy Central’s “Broad City” and the movie “Don’t Think Twice.”

British pop sensation Adele recently gave an interview with Vanity Fair, where she opened up about her postpartum depression and facing the challenges of motherhood: "I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me,” she said. "I didn’t talk to anyone about it. I was very reluctant." Adele began to feel better after she took her boyfriend's advice and started speaking with other pregnant women and mothers who understood her situation. Opening up helped lift her depression: "Eventually I just said, I’m going to give myself an afternoon a week, just to do whatever I want without my baby…A friend of mine said, ‘Really? Don’t you feel bad?’…I said, I do, but not as bad as I’d feel if I didn’t do it.” More...

Scientists have named Marconi Union’s Weightless, the "most relaxing song ever.” Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson confirms: “Weightless induced the greatest relaxation – higher than any of the other music tested. Brain imaging studies have shown that music works at a very deep level within the brain, stimulating not only those regions responsible for processing sound but also ones associated with emotions…In fact, Weightless was so effective, many women became drowsy and I would advise against driving while listening to the song because it could be dangerous." The study found Weightless to be 11% more relaxing than all the other songs tested, lowering anxiety rates by 65%. More...
