Horses as Counselors: An Addition to the Herd!

Mondays may not always be my favorite day of the week, but I am certainly looking forward to next Monday.  It will be a big day for me, my family and my practice.  Why?  Because a darling palomino gelding will be joining our herd.  Mr. Q is a 7 year old Haflinger/Paint cross and is considered to be “kid safe and mother approved.”  I am very excited to introduce him to my clients, but I do anticipate having to answer the following question about Q’s breeding:  “You bought a half of what?”

Technically, Q is half Haflinger.  If you don’t know anything about the breed, believe me when I tell you that Haflingers are wonderful little horses.  The breed originated in the mountains of Austria and is considered to be an all-purpose helper, used for riding, driving and farm work.  They are small, Q is about 14.2 hands, but they are sturdy and can carry an adult without breaking a sweat.  Haflingers are also known for their personalities.  They are often described as cheerful, outgoing and happy creatures.

That description should be a good clue into why I think Q will be a great therapist.  He is a very friendly guy and seems to like being around people.  He is also very curious and responsive to his environment.  I believe he will be a safe and effective member of the team.   Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he is extremely cute!

Check out the American Haflinger Registry’s webite for more information about Haflingers:
