Counseling Skills and Practice
This course provides a student with the counseling skills necessary to establish a counseling relationship with the client characterized by warmth, respect, genuineness, concreteness, and empathy. It includes both didactic presentation and role-play practice of these eight core communication skills: attending, confrontation, interpreting, paraphrasing, probing, reflection, self-disclosure, and summarizing. Students will be allowed time to practice the skills in a laboratory setting in order to facilitate performing the skills of the counseling profession. They will have ample opportunity to practice the skills they have learned in a simulated clinical setting.
