Counseling students who have experienced trauma requires special skills. In this session, learn practical recommendations for counseling students at the elementary, secondary, and college levels.

Richard Joseph Behun, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Dr. Behun is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, and is a certified PK-12 school counselor. Dr. Behun holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and has earned master’s degrees in Education Law, School Counseling, and School Administration. He has extensive experience working with middle and high school students who have experienced trauma in his previous positions as a professional school counselor and high school principal. Dr. Behun conducts research and lectures in the areas of child sexual abuse, mandated reporting law, and civil liability for counselors. 

Julie A. Cerrito, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor and Director of the School Counseling Program at The University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Dr. Cerrito is a National Certified Counselor and National Certified School Counselor. She earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Cerrito has over a decade of experience working with children and adolescents as a professional school counselor in the public school system. Over the course of her career, she has attained vast experience counseling students who have endured traumatic events. She has conducted research and presented at the state, regional, and national level regarding the topic of recognizing and reporting child abuse and the implications for school counselors who work with abused children. 

Eric W. Owens, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Counselor Education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Owens is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, an Approved Clinical Supervisor, and is a certified school counselor. He has worked extensively with students in crisis in higher education and K-12 settings, and in addition to his work as a faculty member, Dr. Owens works in private practice. Here he specializes in work with children, adolescents, and young adults who have survived traumatic experiences or are in crisis. Dr. Owens has presented at the state, regional, and national levels on issues related to trauma-focused counseling and crisis intervention.
