ACA and the professional counseling community lost a true advocate of gender equity with the passing of Dr. Bernice (Bunny) Sandler on January 5.
She was an early and influential voice for gender equity in American education and is referred to by many as the "Godmother of Title IX" for her efforts in championing that monumental federal legislation. She served two decades as the director of the Project on the Status of Women in Education at the American Association of Colleges where her influence was felt throughout the Washington professional association and governmental communities.
ACA, then the American Personnel and Guidance Association, benefited from her guidance in the crafting of the Sex Equality and Guidance Opportunities (SEGO) proposal that went on to be funded by the U.S. Department of Education in the mid 1980s.
Sandler earned her doctorate in counseling at the University of Maryland.
