Thomas J. Sweeney Award for Visionary Leadership and Advocacy
The Thomas J. Sweeney Award for Visionary Leadership and Advocacy is given in honor of the lifetime contributions of Dr. Sweeney to the counseling profession. This award is presented to a professional counselor or counselor educator in recognition of career contributions to the counseling profession through leadership and advocacy ($500 honorarium).
Presented to Don Ward
Don Ward, PhD, directed the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Pittsburg State University for over three decades and was instrumental in maintaining CACREP program accreditation before retiring in December 2016. The Psychology and Counseling Department, the College of Education, university administrators, faculty, and staff will greatly miss him as a wise mentor, colleague, and counselor educator. Dr. Ward has published over 50 journal articles and book chapters spanning more than three decades of research. A frequent presenter at American Counseling Association national and state conferences on group counseling, Dr. Ward has served in leadership and advisory roles in state, local, and national professional organizations.
