Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When and where is the Institute going to be held?

A. The Legislative Institute will be held in the Hilton Alexandria Old Town at 1767 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia, 22314. The Institute will begin 9:00am on Sunday, February 24th, 2008, and conclude by 4:00pm on Tuesday, February 26th. A welcoming reception for attendees will be held on Saturday evening, February 23rd.

Q. Who is eligible to attend the Institute?

A. The Institute is open to all ACA members. Because a significant focus of the Institute will be state-level advocacy work and organization, coordination with ACA branches, regions, and divisions is encouraged but not required. Ideal candidates will be counselors who are interested in increasing their knowledge of, and involvement in, advocacy efforts.

Q. How much do I have to know about public policy in order to attend?

A. Nothing! The Institute is designed to meet the needs of both counselors just starting to get their feet wet in public policy and experienced advocates who want to strengthen their knowledge and skills.

Q. How much will it cost to attend the Institute?

A. There is a $339 registration fee to attend the Institute. Advanced Registration is available for only $239.00 through November 15th. Get an additional $40 off if you are an ACA Student Member.

The registration fee covers food, bus transportation, presenters, document production, and ancillary hotel meeting space and equipment costs. Attendees and/or their sponsoring organization will also need to cover lodging, a few meals, and transportation costs associated with the training.

Q. What will the training include?

A. Counselors attending the conference will be given a strong background in the policymaking process, preparing them to carry out advocacy activities on behalf of an organization. Topics covered will include:

• Congressional procedure and the policymaking process;
• how to create and motivate grassroots activists;
• lobbying elected officials;
• communicating with legislators;
• state and federal issues affecting the profession.

The Institute is designed to provide training in both state and federal-level advocacy.  On Tuesday, February 26th, Institute attendees will go to Capitol Hill to lobby the offices of their members of Congress.  Alternate activities will be arranged for those attendees prohibited from lobbying.

Q. How do I sign up for the Institute?

A. Registration for the 2008 ACA Legislative Institute has closed.

Q. What is the deadline for registering for the Institute?

A. In order to allow adequate planning of hotel arrangements and Institute activities, and adequate time for attendees to plan their travel, forms must be received no later than January 15, 2008. Please note that advance registration is available at a savings of $100.00 through November 15th.

Q. Can I get continuing education credits for attending the Institute?

A. Yes. ACA will grant continuing education credits for individuals attending the entire Institute.

Q. Can past attendees attend only the lobbying portion of the Institute?

A. Yes. There are a limited amount of slots open for past attendees who only want to attend the lobbying portion of the Institute. The one day registration fee is $69 and attendees will earn 2.75 CEs for participating. Attendees interested in this option must get prior approval from the ACA Office of Public Policy, and will be required to arrive Monday afternoon, February 25th, for the lobbying issues training. Lobbying visits will take place on Tuesday, February 26th. Please contact for more information.

Q. What should I bring/wear?

A. Attendees should plan to bring business attire for our visits to Capitol Hill, as well as business cards.  What you wear the rest of the time is up to you, although business casual is suggested.  ACA will provide all other materials.

Q. Will I get a chance to see the city?

A. The Institute is being held in historic Old Town, Alexandria, and while the agenda is relatively full, your evenings will be free to use in exploring the city. We will also be scheduling a brief tour of the U.S. Capitol and another sightseeing event for attendees during the Institute. Individuals wanting to see more of Washington, D.C. may want to arrive a day early, or leave a day later.

Q. Which airport should I fly into?

A. The Washington area has three major airports: Reagan National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI).  National Airport is significantly more convenient, as it is only 10 minutes away from Alexandria.  Keep in mind that attendees are responsible for their own transportation from the airport to the hotel.

Q. Who can I contact with other questions on the Institute?

A. Questions can be directed to Christie Lum with ACA's Office of Public Policy and Legislation, at 800-347-6647 x354, and can be submitted by email to
