I am not sure what your approach is but I personally take very few interns. When I do take one, typically because they pester me to death for an interview and then show a certain spark, a kindred spirit and a fire that engulfs me, I take them in and they become part of the therapeutic family. Like having a child you watch them go through the stages of development. They are uncertain at first, taking each step very cautiously not wanting to let their clients down, not wanting to let them fall. You praise them as much as you can, help guide them into the professional that you know they are capable of becoming and providing constructive feedback as nurturing as possible; typically this feedback surrounds the quality of paperwork. Counselors unlike their social work counterparts typically hate paperwork. Don’t ask me why.

Now I cannot say that I really follow baseball nowadays; I tried to on a few brief afternoons off but the sport has become too slow with its allowance of what feels like lifelong ceremonies before each pitch. Adjust, limber up, adjust, strut, and approach home plate, pitch and repeat. By the second batter I was switching to something with more action, like watching paint dry. I am also not a gambler; I never had extra money that I felt I could just as well throw out the window as bet on anything with. Call me old fashioned but I believe in working for a living (not that I am against those who gamble). One thing that strikes me as very hypocritical though is the treatment of Charlie Hustle.

Many of you reading this are likely doing so just to find out what the heck I am talking about. I would guess that the majority of you have never heard of many of the words in my title. You may feel a bit lost, confused and possibly frustrated; I assure you that this was by design so that I could illustrate my point.

If you work at a qualifying agency that utilizes volunteers, you should seriously consider becoming involved with the President's Volunteer Service Awards program. It is easy to sign up if you qualify (specific information pertaining to qualifications and to sign up as an agency or as a volunteer can be found at the link below). Should you decide to sign up, the online process takes only a few minutes; it is then reviewed and either approved or denied. The review process can take a few weeks but our agency learned of the approval in a matter of a few days.

No, this is not an infomercial. There will be no “act now, supplies are limited” or “now how much do you expect to pay” and forget about seeing me in a suit with question marks or some such nonsense all over it. This is just an FYI to hopefully help you reduce some of your debt while helping others. I am sorry to say that it will not help everyone but for those it does, it can be incredible.
