I just returned home from the Florida Counseling Association’s (FCA) annual leadership development institute (LDI , and boy can I feel the energy! It is just such a wonderful experience being in a room full of leaders from various counseling backgrounds and stages of their career. Doctoral students were eager to be involved and receive mentorship as emerging leaders. First-time LDI attendees had the opportunity to explore where they may best fit, in terms of volunteering their leadership and expertise. Seasoned veterans to FCA led us during the two-day experience. As a whole group, we were very honored to have Dr. Marcheta Evans, ACA Past-President (2009-10) and Dean for the School of Professional Studies and the Worden School of Social Services at Our Lady of the Lake University, as facilitator for our event, Transformation Through Resilience, LEADERSHIP, and Advocacy.
This professional development opportunity was music to my ears as it parallels my summer coursework in Leadership Development and Organizational Leadership. I found myself very connected to the content of the entire institute. It is a wonderful feeling to see the literature I am reading come to fruition in my life experiences. As I looked around the room, I found myself hypothesizing in my mind as to what is each person’s leadership style. Given the nature of our work as counselors, servant and transformational leadership principles I believe transcended throughout the group.
Not only could I feel the energy, I could also see it. What an amazing opportunity to come together with like-minded individuals and brainstorm about how to further address the needs of the members of our professional organization. I saw numerous counselor educators connecting with one another regarding pedagogy. I saw numerous doctoral students distributing their business cards and offering their support to various initiatives within the division organizations. I could see great minds hard at work. When reflecting upon my prior experience with LDI’s of other state organizations, I can wholeheartedly say that this is one of the warmest, supportive, and forward thinking groups that I have had the pleasure to work with. Thank you to all of the attendees of FCA’s annual institute—I’m already looking forward to accomplishing the goals we set for to do!
