I was sitting here trying to think of what to write and then it was time for a client to come in. I mentioned to her I was just doing a blog and couldn’t think of what to write. This seemed to get her creative juices flowing and she got all excited and said to me… you know how some people use their mental illness as an excuse for not being able to function , it’s true for some people but look at the deaf population…. They created a whole language for their “disability” and she said she is going to do the same, she’s going to use her weaknesses as strengths to build on and use them as positives. She wants to help others overcome their mental illness by using their symptomology.
This client is a true survivor, she has endured horrendous abuse; however she is finding her strengths after 3 weeks of therapy! She even encouraged me with this blog, she wrote half of it and was eager to share it with others. She still has her deep painful issues to deal with but will not let this stop her. She does speeches for NAMII and talks about her journey towards recovery.
What I got from this is to never give up on any client eve if they have very serious symptoms and illnesses, with a little work they may also stand up and not let their illness define who they are, they can work with it. This particular client used EMDR and talk therapy to work on her issues and get to the place she is now.
The reason I wrote this is to encourage counselors to take special interest In the clients strengths and changing the weaknesses. They can feel good about themselves even if they have to live with their illness..
