If by any chance you don’t understand Sigmund Freud’s system or model of personality development, look beneath the surface. Start looking ‘outside the box’. It just may be, that you have crushed your world into such a tiny box that nothing else can venture in. Well, in this case, you are proposing that your world is the only world. Maybe you truly believe that your world is the one correct world of ideas about how one’s personality evolves.
Simply, this is Freud’s philosophy of human nature. In a certain sense it shadows the ‘tabula rasa’ concept by the mentioning of the ‘id’ as the state of being at birth. How can anyone doubt that this is indeed a very pleasure-seeking time of life and controlled by one’s instinctual drives? And how can anyone doubt that what is written on a baby’s slate at that period of life dictates the pace of one’s life thereafter?
It has been said by many that Sigmund Freud’s approach to understanding and describing human nature and one’s personality as being deterministic. So be it. It is my suspicion that no one really changes. Perhaps it may be safe to say that a few adjustments are made from time to time over the lifespan in order to manipulate one’s world or one’s environment. To my mind, people wear ‘cloaks’ to cover up their real selves. As they put on these cloaks, they are likely to be accepted by those who hold different views of the way life should be lived. Perhaps this is an attempt of harmonizing their environment and enjoying a level of peace.
