Play Therapy for Children with History of Interpersonal Trauma/Attachment Breaks: A Culturally Responsive, Systemic Approach

Explore the therapeutic use of play therapy in counseling with young, traumatized children within a humanistic, developmental, culturally-responsive, and evidence-based framework. Play therapy is a universal language that allows counselors to understand and help young traumatized children from diverse cultures who may have difficulty expressing themselves meaningfully through words alone, particularly for young children with a history of interpersonal, often preverbal trauma. Based on presenters’ experience and substantial research, strategies and cultural considerations for working with this population of children and their caregivers will be presented and demonstrated through video demonstration and case examples.

EEG Biofeedback ("neurofeedback") is an important emerging field of intervention relevant to a wide range of mental and emotional disorders, as well as for performance optimization and mental fitness. An increasing number of counselors are hearing about neurofeedback, but may not have access to comprehensive information that will facilitate making decisions and plans relative to the possible inclusion of neurofeedback into a practice or an educational program. This LI will bring together a wide range of material, presented by two leading practitioners, who have extensive experience in counseling as well as in biofeedback and neurofeedback. Gain a clear and current perspective on this important modality.

Hot off the Press - The New 2014 ACA Code of Ethics: An In-Depth Review of Critical Changes
ACA Ethics Revision Task Force

The ACA Code of Ethics has been revised and updated to reflect the ever changing landscape of the practice of counseling. This comprehensive LI will provide the chance to be the first to receive an in-depth review of the major updates, changes, and revisions in the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics. An extensive overview of the new distance counseling/social media section will be presented along with expanded guidelines concerning referrals, clarification on competence and values issues, an update on beneficial and harmful relationships, and much more. Extensive use of case examples will be used to highlight both the principles behind the ethics and the day to day challenges the 2014 code addresses. Time will be allotted for discussion and questions.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents: Practical Applications Across Settings, and Guidelines for Implementation

DBT has been identified as a potential evidence-based treatment (EBT) for suicidal adolescents. Yet since EBTs have been identified, efforts to transport them into naturalistic settings have been met with failures (e.g., Gioia & Dziadosz, 2008). This presentation will demonstrate DBT’s utility with adolescents, and explore what factors help and hinder successful implementation efforts. The presenter will share research findings from successfully implementing DBT in an inpatient setting. The LI includes experiential components, small group discussions, and lecture format. Receive resources for implementing DBT in your own practice, including a 12-session outline for group leaders and participants.

Values Clarification includes many practical strategies useful in career, school, mental health, rehabilitation, marriage and family, substance abuse, and other individual and group counseling settings and psychoeducational interventions. This LI will include demonstrations of Values Clarification counseling with individuals and groups, an overview of Values Clarification theory, practice and research; and several small group practice sessions to enhance participants’ skills in using values clarification questions and strategies with individuals and groups.

Demystifying the DSM-5 Diagnostic Process

Presenters will present a systematic way to render a DSM-5 diagnosis. They will discuss all diagnostic categories and all new diagnoses. Also, they will explore what diagnoses did not make it in to the DSM-5, but are designated in Section 3 as “Conditions for Further Study”. They will utilize all of the new diagnostic tools: dimensional assessments, specifiers, modifiers, and levels of severity. Further, they will discuss use of the WHO-DAS Disability rating scales. Dr. King’s agency was one of the DSM-5 Clinical Trial Sites. Dr. Buckley was trained by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) on how to train others on the DSM-5 and Chairs the NBCC test revision committee for the NCMHCE DSM-5 revisions. Together they bring a wealth of experience regarding diagnostic procedures.
