While most counselors have received foundational training in addressing religion and spirituality with clients as an aspect of diversity, most counselors have not received advanced training in the use of assessment instruments and methods to gather relevant information from clients that will inform the work of counseling. This LI will introduce the counselor to assessement methods for clinical interviews and to scales/instruments for in-session use with clients. Active engagement in role plays, case studies, and discussion are expected.

Although there has been an explosion of research regarding child sexual abuse throughout the last thirty years, the overwhelming focus of this literature has addressed issues in counseling sexually abused females. In recent years, professionals have explored the complexity of working with male survivors of sexual abuse. As a result, a true understanding of counseling sexually abused males remains in its infancy. This LI will highlight the challenges when counseling male survivors of sexual abuse. Play therapy theory will be reviewed to empower clinicians to achieve evidenced-based practices through a non-threatening approach. Specific play therapy techniques will be demonstrated for use in counseling male survivors.

Tired of attending ethics presentations which focus on the do’s and don’ts, which reiterate principles you already know by heart? This LI moves ethics instruction to a new level. While knowledge of ethical codes and laws is important, it is not enough. Applying the same principles used in work with clients, this experiential LI moves beyond instruction about the obvious into the realm of the psychological. Participants are guided toward understanding the internal basis of ethical actions. Through large and small group activities, you will identify areas of personal ethical vulnerability and develop a proactive, individualized plan for managing these ethically challenging situations.

This LI will briefly summarize core findings from over 40 years of counseling outcome research and teach an evidence-based method for enacting these potent therapeutic factors. Learn hands-on, empirically supported methods to improve counseling outcomes, amplify the effect of the therapeutic alliance, and empower clients through formal client feedback. To help take these valuable lessons into your practice, a practical step-by-step model for integrating formal client feedback will be reviewed, demonstrated, and rehearsed.

This LI will focus on advanced approaches to constructivist career counseling as an idiographic process. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated and you will have the opportunity to engage in the narrative process of uncovering, deconstructing, and constructing a career story. The blending of quantitative (e.g., Holland typology, Myers-Briggs types, O*NET) and qualitative (e.g., life line, card sorts, constructivist résumé and analysis, life roles circles, career genogram, goal map) approaches will provide you with the knowledge and tools to embrace this dynamic process.

EcoWellness was recently introduced in the counseling literature as one’s appreciation, respect for, and awe of nature that results in feelings of connectedness to the natural environment and the perception of holistic wellness. The purpose of this LI is to provide practitioners with a foundation and practical strategies for integrating EcoWellness into counseling assessment and practice. EcoWellness and the current multidisciplinary nature theory and research will be reviewed. Tips and strategies for integrating EcoWellness into traditional counseling settings will be explored and the ethical and multicultural considerations for bringing nature into counseling will be examined.
