The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking a Research/Clinical Coordinator to work with combat-injured military and veterans and their families in a research study at the Brooke Army Medical Center surrounding community in the San Antonio area.
HJF provides administrative and management support to BAMC.
This is a randomized control intervention study that compares a newly designed family-centered intervention with the existing usual care at three medical rehabilitation sites: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (Bethesda, MD), Brooke Army Medical Center (San Antonio, Texas) and UNC Chapel Hill/Durham VA. The position is full-time and will include afternoon, evening, and weekend hours.
Research coordinator will recruit appropriate combat injured families for the study, consent participants, and administer standardized instruments at 4 time waves over 2 years. Additionally, coordinator will assess family needs and coordinate necessary services. For families randomized into the intervention group, they will meet with parents and children to teach emotional regulation, problem-solving, and communication skills by following a manualized intervention.
The research is funded through a grant to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS), which is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.
Responsibilities:
1. Develops and maintains relationships with community, military, and veteran support services. Conducts outreach and recruitment efforts with providers at clinical and community sites to identify potential participants. Maintains partnerships with providers for recruitment and referral processes.
2. Presents study concepts and benefits to prospective referral sources and subjects.
3. Coordinates identification of appropriate and eligible subjects with assistance from clinical staff. Approaches prospective subjects, briefly describes the study and responsibilities of participation, screens families for eligibility, and consents interested subjects.
4. Coordinates data collection and management. Administers standardized questionnaires and collect other data consistent with the study protocol with service members, partners, and children. Maintains organization and security of data collection procedures and materials.
5. Develops a working relationship and trusting alliance with participating parents and children.
6. Assesses family needs and coordinates community services consistent with procedures specified by the study protocol.
7. Develops detailed familiarity with, and is able to implement, family intervention procedures as described in the study protocol and manual.
8. Follows manualized procedures to teach communication, emotional regulation, and problem solving skills to children and parents receiving the intervention.
9. Conducts manualized training sessions with parents alone, children alone, and families together for families receiving the intervention.
10. Maintains contact with all families and conducts standardized assessments with parents and children in-person and via phone and internet for 2-years after enrollment in the study.
11. Participates in regularly scheduled review and supervision and modify approach to maintain consistency with study protocol. Includes supervision of data collection and intervention for security and fidelity.
12. A proportion of time (10%) will be dedicated to clinical work to maintain clinical skills with a military population for the randomized control intervention study. Clinician will engage directly with medical providers, participate in team rounds, and independently review medical records of consented subjects.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience working with children and families in clinical settings. Ability to learn and become proficient with unfamiliar manualized interventions for families and children. Ability to administer standardized assessments with a view toward obtaining valid and reliable data. Ability to learn and become proficient with secure data collection organization procedures including the use of technology (encryption, Google Drive). Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Highly Desirable Skills: Familiarity or experience with clinical/social science research and data collection. Familiarity with military/veteran affairs settings. Familiarity with motivational interviewing techniques. Experience with military culture and the challenges faced by military/veteran families. Experience with head trauma and PTSD. Experience using video cameras, web-cams, and GoToMeeting. Licensed Psychologist/Counselor/Social Worker.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Computer, email, and smartphone skills. Background in social sciences (Psychology, Social Work, Family Science, Counseling, etc).
Training on study protocol, intervention, and procedures will be provided upon hire.
Minimum Experience: More than 5 years working with children and families.
Physical Capabilities: Walking, standing, and sitting; driving.
Work Environment: Office space provided. Work requires driving to family locations (homes, clinics, other meeting locations) for data collection interviews and intervention sessions. Non-standard work hours for arranging meetings with families and conducting interviews (early mornings, weeknights, and weekends).
