ACA's 49th President, Dr. Judy Lewis, Passes Away

by Amber McLaughlin | Mar 21, 2014
Dr. Lewis was a vociferous advocate for social justice and worked hard to shape and protect the important role that professional counselors play in helping clients and students enjoy a more fulfilling life. Many in the field owe her a debt of gratitude for her passion, her unwavering dedication, and her life-long commitment to the counseling profession.

Dr. Lewis was a professor at Governors State University until her retirement in 2008. She was president of ACA from 2000-2001, as well as Chair of an ACA task force charged with developing the ACA Advocacy Competencies. She co-edited ACA Advocacy Competencies: A Social Justice Framework for Counselors, which was published by ACA to help counselors apply the advocacy competencies across settings and specialties.

Her other books related to counseling and advocacy include Community Counseling: A Multicultural-Social Justice Perspective, Management of Human Service Programs and Substance Abuse Counseling.

After her retirement, Dr. Lewis spent her time in volunteer work focused on community organizing and social justice.

A memorial will be held on April 11 at 10 a.m. at the First Unitarian Society of Chicago in Hyde Park.
