ACA Online Learning
As a professional association, ACA offers professional development courses (post-degree for licensure or certification renewal credit). We have a number of "products" that are designed to assist practitioners in their ethical responsibility of staying current in the field. Please verify with your licensure board or certification body, prior to registration, that these ACA credits are accepted.
Please note that once you have completed registering for an online course, you will receive two (2) emails from acamemberservices@counseling.org within one (1) hour. The first email is a confirmation of your purchase, and the second provides you with the website and access information needed to get started on the course. In order to ensure receipt of these two emails, you should add acamemberservices@counseling.org to your address book.
After purchasing an online course, you will have two years to access and complete the accompanying test. You must score 75% or better on the online course tests, and 100% on the three-question book chapter or JCD article test in order to receive your certificate. Once you have successfully passed the test, you will be able to print a CE certificate for your records.
For questions or other comments, please contact Debbie Beales, Manager, Learning Resources (DBeales@counseling.org).

- From our professional view, clients are multidimensional and complex. We believe each client possesses both the ability to grow and the ability to self-destruct. As counselors, we are privileged to be a part of this therapeutic journey. Along the way we use tools such as an empathic heart, an inquisitive mind, and an archeological and environmental perspective to human development. Our clients' lives are like complex tapestries. Collectively, they represent blended families, wellsprings of culture, and unique genetic creations. Depending on where we meet our clients in their unique stories, we have the opportunity to explore the rich variety of backgrounds from which they have come and to help them generate the missing patches of fabric in their experiences so they may achieve wholeness. For some clients, such missing patches, or gaps, have been filled with drugs and alcohol. When these chemicals are removed (which occurs in the treatment process and subsequent recovery), the developmental deficits still remain.

- The world of work is changing at a rapid pace, and the changes are likely to accelerate during the 21st century. Employment arrangements, such as temporary employment, short-term hires, contractual positions, leased workers, and on-call and part-time workers, have influenced and will continue to influence the career development of all workers (Institute on Rehabilitation Issues, 1999). These changes are having a substantial impact on the life roles of individuals with disabilities, the settings in which these persons live and work, and the events that occur in their lives (National Council on Disability, 2008). At the same time, current disability policy in the United States focuses on the inclusion, independence, and empowerment of people with disabilities (Kosciulek, 2000; United Cerebral Palsy Association, 2007).

All of these programs include a means for identifying academic, career, or social environments that would be compatible with a person's preferences and abilities. Some of the programs are informal, nonstandardized programs. Others adhere to test standardization procedures that include systematic item selection, establishment of representative norms, and ongoing studies of reliability and validity. Both types of comprehensive assessment programs are discussed in this chapter. Only those standardized programs with objective tests of ability are reviewed in this chapter.

- Borderline Personality Disorder
- JCD Fall 2003

- The increasing prevalence of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnoses among women illustrates problems and limitations of the medical model system (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). In particular, diagnoses of BPD continue the trend of overpathologizing women's issues and reinforcing a patriarchal system of diagnosis and treatment. A PTSD diagnosis, with similar criteria, is preferred for traumatized women because it portrays them in a more positive context. This article explores the overlapping relationship between BPD and PTSD and critiques how both are viewed within the mental health community. Previous research on BPD and PTSD is explored, as well as concerns and limitations regarding both diagnostic categories.

- The standard for body size and weight is socially determined. It is a cultural phenomenon that demands that the current ideal physique is slim. Countries that commonly experience the threat of famine have historically had virtually no cases of anorexia or bulimia, and obesity has been considered desirable. In previous eras in the United States, larger bodies were associated with prosperity, in contrast with current mores that associate thinness with affluence. Obesity is now considered a correlate of the lower class. Continuous images indoctrinate the public with the message that to be considered successful, masterful, and acceptable, one must display a thin physique.

Tarvydas (1998). When appropriate, this transcultural model includes aspects of other ethical resolution models, such as R. R. Cottone's (2001) Social Constructivist Model and A.H. Davis's (1997) Collaborative Model. The proposed model is presented in a step-by-step, linear format that can be used by counselors facing ethical dilemmas in a variety of settings and with different cultural groups.

- Chapter: Tears of Blood: Understanding and Creatively Intervening in the Grief of Miscarriage
- Kristin I. Douglas and Joy R. Fox
- (1) Hour Continuing Education Credit
- Imagine the excitement that comes with a long awaited pregnancy, only to have that joy and excitement shattered by a miscarriage. A pregnancy suddenly ended by miscarriage is, unfortunately, not an uncommon experience for women. Many facets of grief often accompany miscarriage loss including emotional turmoil, confusion, shock, disbelief, guilt, fear, depression, anger, stress, frustration, and disappointment. Challenging questions accompany miscarriage such as, “What happened?” “Did I do anything to cause this? Will I be able to get pregnant again and carry a baby to full-term?” or “Will the emotional hurt and pain that I feel right now ever end?” Western culture does not often deal well with death. Cultural and societal expectations accompanying grief and loss create challenges for women and families coping with a miscarriage loss. The stigma associated with grieving a miscarriage can complicate the grief experience. Therapists can better connect with and assist their grieving clients if they identify and understand factors that impact miscarriage loss, honor and validate loss experiences, and help support clients in the grieving process.

- Ulrika Haggård-Grann
- (1) Hour Continuing Education Credit
- Although "End-of-Life Care for Terminally Ill Clients" is a section of the ACA Code of Ethics (American Counseling Association, 2005), neither the Code nor the counseling literature provides much direction for counselors who work with clients who are dying and with the clients' loved ones. The authors provide counselors with an overview of the issues that may be relevant when working with such clients.

- Social empowerment is designed to prepare individuals to reconstruct their political, economic, psychological, and social environments. Addressing empowerment for lesbian and gay male populations is critical because of the numerous stereotypical situations that result in their powerlessness. The application of social empowerment strategies as tools for self-advocacy with lesbian and gay male populations is presented as a consideration for counseling.

- The literature on the counseling and psychotherapy of African American women is relatively new. This author has been examining the imposter phenomenon, i.e., an internal experience of intellectual phoniness, among high achieving African American women since the early 1980s. Counselors must be aware of this phenomenon and its antecedents if they are to effectively assist all women who may seek their expertise. Counselors must fully understand the pain and emotional distress often inflicted on and experienced by their African American female clients in academic careers.

- African American males present a unique segment of society. No other group faces the number of institutional obstacles yet is conditioned so heavily to reject the idea of receiving outside help to cope with these burdens. Counselors must admit the devastating and negative effects of racism. Racism must be acknowledged in therapy by both the counselor and the client.

Counselors, therefore, need to be knowledgeable about psychopharmacology to monitor its impact on the therapeutic relationship and on client outcome. Discussed are potential ethical dilemmas with pharmacotherapy interventions, case studies demonstrating proper support of pharmacotherapy with diverse clientele, and critical elements of master's level training in psychopharmacology.

- Counselor Advocacy for Access
- Book: Counseling for Social Justice, Second Edition
- Ellen S. Fabian
- (1) Hour Continuing Education Credit
- Two challenges to understanding disability in a social justice context are that disability itself has no consensual definition and that even an individual's perception of his or her own disability can fluctuate throughout the life span. A second aspect that differentiates disability as a status from race or gender is that an individual may be born with a physical or mental impairment; may develop one through a variety of chronic illnesses throughout life; or may traumatically acquire one through an accident, war injury, or disease. Scholars in disability studies have commented that disability is a universal experience, in that "if we are not disabled now, we probably will be if we live long enough".

- (1) Hour Continuing Education Credit
- The traditional way of organizing guidance and counseling in the schools, first as a position, and then as a position in a service, is continuing to give way to the organizational framework of a comprehensive guidance and counseling program. Comprehensive guidance and counseling programs are increasingly becoming a reality, not just a promise, in school districts across the United States. This change is not yet complete, however, because school counselors are often unable to spend 100% of their time carrying out a fully implemented comprehensive guidance and counseling program. They are still expected to fulfill multiple, often conflicting roles.

- The transformed role of school counselors as advocates is key in reducing the academic achievement gap. Redefining the school counselors' role requires culturally competent practitioners, social justice advocates, and organizational/social change agents. A major obstacle to implementing culturally responsive social justice advocacy and change in schools is referred to as the nice counselor syndrome (NCS). This article discusses the insidious effects of NCS and outlines a set of recommendations designed to assist school counselors in moving beyond this syndrome.

The results mirror many opinions in the literature. Of the 186 counseling clients who responded to the survey, 96% would be willing to seek telephone counseling again compared with 63.1% who reported being willing to seek face-to-face counseling. More than half (58%) of the respondents who had experienced both telephone and face-to-face counseling preferred telephone counseling.
