~ ACA Counselor State Licensure Guide -- New Edition Just Out ~
Professional counselors are licensed in 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. How do these laws compare? Which states require a jurisprudence exam? How many continuing education credits does each state require for licensure renewal? Which states have reciprocity? All of these and many more licensure questions are answered in the newly revised ACA licensure guide, Licensure Requirements for Professional Counselors: A State-By-State Report. The 2007 edition has a new 30-page section that identifies the scope of practice for each state, and includes updates to all contact information, fees, renewal requirements and more.

~ Student Scribbles - College Textbook Industry Comes Under Scrutiny ~
A recent study by the Campaign to Reduce College Textbook Costs of the Student Public Interest Groups (PIRGs) has revealed what counselor education students and faculty have know for some time. The cost of college textbooks have spiraled and influence the cost of enrollment, increasing at a rate four times that of inflation over the past twelve years. Whether price controls and publishing tactics will change remains to be seen, but PIRG has offered a number of recommendations about the pricing, sale and resale of textbooks. ~ Relevant Research - Americans Want to Focus Spending on Education and Health ~
A new survey by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago has found the American public favors more government spending, particularly for education and health, areas that have consistently led the public's spending priorities in recent years. When questioned about spending on education for the 2006 survey, nearly three quarters (74.1 percent) said the government is spending too little. Health spending followed with two thirds of respondents (66.4 percent) saying the spending was insufficient. The complete summary and study can be found at: http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/07/070110.gss.shtml
~ Fast Facts - Hispanic Achievement Levels Abysmal ~
Statistics recently released by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) find the U.S. educational system is failing the growing population of Latino students. The report notes that Latino students enrolled in Pre-K through 12th grade in the United States represented 17 percent of total student enrollment in 2005. Of that number, less than half of Hispanic males complete high school and Hispanic students are less likely to be attending schools with challenging academic courses. NCLR also reports that Hispanics 25 years and older are less likely than African Americans and Caucasians to achieve a Bachelor's degree. Additional information and facts can be found at:
