The Senate’s health care reform bill, unveiled November 18th by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, fails to establish Medicare coverage of licensed professional counselors. This despite the fact that the Senate has twice approved Medicare coverage of counselors, and that Medicare beneficiaries need better access to outpatient mental health service providers. The American Counseling Association (ACA) is deeply saddened, as is the nation, about the tragic shooting at Ft. Hood. Although the alleged shooter was a psychiatrist, not a counselor, all of us in the helping professions feel a particular sadness. There are many questions still to be answered but we urge everyone to refrain from generalizing this tragedy to persons of any one faith or ethnicity. These were the actions of one troubled individual and do not reflect the actions of any group of individuals. Read More...
