The College of New Jersey invites applications for the position of Director of Psychological Counseling Services. The successful candidate will be an experienced administrator and clinician who is passionate about the health and well-being of students, capable of assuming a leadership role in ongoing campus efforts to promote health and wellness, reduce high-risk behaviors among students, and strengthen campus crisis intervention and emergency response. The Director of Psychological Counseling Services reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Services and supervises 4.4 FTE clinical staff positions, a full-time support staff member, and graduate interns.
The Director is responsible for the overall administration of a campus counseling center that is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and supports the educational mission of the College. The Director provides vision for the educational framework, development, and delivery of effective mental health services to a primarily undergraduate and residential student population. The Director is expected to advance new initiatives and to collaborate with senior administrators to establish a behavioral assessment and response team that will coordinate responses to emergencies and crisis situations involving students. The Director leads a departmental strategic planning process and guides the team effort in articulating priorities and initiatives, aligning resources with strategy, assessing programs and services, and facilitating data-driven quality improvement activities. The Director oversees mental health crisis intervention, psychological and psychiatric consultation and treatment, referrals to community-based resources, and the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and protocols. The Director ensures that accreditation standards for clinical services and training programs are met. The Director serves on campus committees and workgroups while developing and maintaining strong working relationships within the campus community and with community-based mental health agencies and professionals.
The ideal candidate will have extensive administrative and clinical experience, and a proven history of implementing practices that promote health interventions, wellness, and preventive measures for a diverse student body. Qualifications include:
- A doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from an APA-accredited program;
- Licensure as a psychologist in the State of New Jersey or license eligibility and licensure in New Jersey within two years of appointment;
- At least 5 years of post-doctoral clinical and supervisory experience, with evidence of progress and increased responsibility administering mental health services;
- Clinical experience with college-aged students; knowledge of current developmental issues and trends of college students and models for campus health and counseling services;
- A demonstrated understanding of supervisory and managerial concepts and principles, as well as a history of successfully applying such concepts and principles;
- Experience using technology and performance/outcome measures to assess effectiveness, foster accountability, and promote continuous improvement;
- Strong fiscal and resource management skills;
- Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills, enabling effective representation of mental health issues in the college community;
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to form collaborative relationships with members of a diverse campus community; and
- Demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethics; ability to collaborate with and guide the efforts of interns, professional colleagues, and diverse constituencies.
